What was the inspiration for Medici MediaSpace?
Serendipity is a popular word among the entrepreneurial community in St. Louis these days, but it's often confused with mere coincidence or luck. It may have been mere coincidence that led to the partnership of Josh Levey and me, but serendipity seems a more appropriate word.
Less than three years ago, Josh was the CEO of an investment portfolio company, a technology fulfillment company and an operational marketing company which together had combined revenues of close to $70 million. Computime Equity Ventures invested in high-growth companies that had a common need for capital primarily used for sales and marketing services. But due to a strained partnership with distributors, CEV suffered the consequences and Josh was forced to downsize.
At the beginning of 2016, I chose to leave my family's business at Rockwood Bank to pursue a variety of enterprises. I had a personal challenge to launch a business, or at least a business concept, every week for a year. TOP 50 STL was created to showcase the top 50 positive weekly stories about St. Louis alongside ideas for new businesses and economic development for the city.
By coincidence and luck, Josh and I crossed paths at a serendipitous time. Josh had the experience of running multiple companies at once, and I had a history of financing small to midsize companies throughout my career. Both of us were seeking a platform and a partnership that could support our many interests.
Josh maintained investments in an online media hub and a small media production company - the tools every business, small and large, needs in today’s world. I recognized the potential in the large commercial space vacated after the downsizing of CEV and imagined a day when it could be filled with multiple businesses.
What is it like to be part of the Medici community?
Josh and I launched Medici MediaSpace in August 2016. It’s a coworking space that provides consistent, viable and collaborative business opportunities for members to learn, share resources and make money. The facility boasts office spaces, conference rooms, television and audio studios, but what makes Medici unique is the community we're organizing and the camaraderie we're building. Medici members come from a variety of industries, backgrounds and levels of experience, but they all come together with a shared set of core principles that make working together a magical experience. At least, that's what we call it, Medici Magic. It may be luck. It may be coincidence. I think it’s serendipity.
